Medieval Europe was most famous for the obvious use of castles and major strongholds, and these wonders of architecture are actually extraordinarily complex for their time, from sneaky traps to hidden doors, castles of the time were legendary. Most castles followed a minor architectural rule, that the strongest part of the keep was the King's Quarters and Great Hall, which both were often used for the civilians during conflict. As well as this, most castles had grooves and slits between the walls, which allowed for archers to take out their enemies safely and from a distance. Pictured, are 3 different forms of castle, and each image is labelled. Usually, castles would have towers situated around the inner or outer walls, which usually housed seige weapons and archer battalions, for ranged defense. As well as this, most castles featured a moat and drawbridge, so unwanted visitors could not make their way in the central units of the keep.
